Amid the current economic hardship and attendant high inflation and cost of living affecting millions of Nigerian consumers, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has disclosed its operatives intercepted 21 smuggled food trucks heading for neighbouring countries.

The EFCC said this in a statement issued Tuesday,  March 6, 2024, via its verified X account.

The anti-graft regulatory Commission affirmed that the confiscated items were being ferried across towards N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central African Republic, and Cameroon respectively.

The latest seizures occurred against the backdrop of the increasing costs of food items in Nigeria.

Inflation rate has reached 29.90 percent while the cost of living has hit the rooftops, prompting some considerable protests in several parts of the West African country in recent times.

The Commission noted the operatives at the Maiduguri Zonal Command made the seizures in the North-East region.

The EFCC stated: “The trucks were intercepted in a sting operation at major exit routes along Kalabiri/Gamboru Ngala and Bama roads, Borno State.

“Investigation showed food items cleverly concealed in the trucks that would have gone undetected but for the eagle-eyed vigilance of operatives of the Commission.

The EFCC disclosed “further checks showed that the Waybills covering the goods carried by trucks indicated their destinations as N’djamena, Chad Republic, Central Africa Republic, and Cameroon respectively.

According to the Commission, the arrest of the trucks is expected to stem the tide of food insecurity occasioned by unscrupulous antics of smugglers across the country.

Stating the arrested suspects are being profiled, the EFCC has vowed to charge them to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
