In regard to the issue of expired passports of some Nigerians overseas, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has clarified that an expired passport is a valid proof of the country’s citizenship.

ConsumerConnect reports the NIS, which made this clarification in a blogpost via its verified X (formerly Twitter) account, disclosed the Service had sent a document to Nigerian embassies, high commissions, concerned parties, and airlines.

It noted the passport regulatory agency communicated to the stakeholders, that individuals who can prove their Nigerian citizenship should not be denied entry into the country.

An expired passport is a valid proof of citizenship, it declared.

The Service stressed that

Nigerians with a valid means of identification cannot be refused entry into the country.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (@nigimmigration)  stated: “This is absolutely correct. We sent out a document (again) in this regard to embassies, high commissions, concerned parties and airlines in this regard.

“You can’t refuse a Nigerian (with valid means of identity – expired or not) into his/her country. Nigeria belongs to us all.
