Following public outcry over the introduction of the charge on calls and data, the Federal Government has announced suspension of the proposed five percent tax on telecommunications services in the country.

ConsumerConnect reports Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, Honourable Minister for Communications and Digital Economy, announced the suspension Monday, September 5, 2022, during the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector.

Pantami also explained the decision to suspend the tax was arrived at by stakeholders, who decried that the telecommunications sector already had challenges of multiple taxes.

It is recalled the Federal Government through the Budget Office of the Federation had said that it would begin the implementation of its proposed Excise Duty on telecommunication services and beverages in 2023.

However, the Minister for Communications and Digital Economy has continued to maintain that he is against the implementation of such tax.

He noted that the proposal would increase the costs of telecommunication services for Nigerian consumers.
