For committing environmental infractions through air and water pollution, the Ogun State Government (OGSG) has shut Sonata Agri Limited, a cashew-nut producing company, located at Km 51 Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, at Mowe, in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area (LGA) of the state.

ConsumerConnect reports Mr. Ola Oresanya, Special Adviser (SA) to the Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State on Environment, disclosed the shutdown was necessitated by the company’s failure to heed several warnings to stop the pollution in the area.

Oresanya stated that the state government had no option than to seal off the company in the interest of public safety and hygiene.

The Ogun State Governor’s aide also said: “In the case of this company, we actually gave them a ‘Stop-Work’ order when we discovered the reckless soothes emanating from their power plants.

“We then invited them, directed them on what to do but they remained recalcitrant.”

Oresanya further noted: “So, we sealed the company because of the risk their continued operations would have on people living around the company, especially children and pregnant women due to fumes from these plants.

“Also, the release of waste-water from their steaming machines during the Clean in Place CIP into drainages equally posed another serious threat to the environment, which the state government would not tolerate.”

He as well said: “This is a state that prides itself as an agrarian state.

“And as highly industrialised as we are, we don’t joke with air quality of the environment because we want to make the state as liveable as possible for residents.”

The Ogun State Governor’s aide warned industries still polluting the environment to desist forthwith.

According to him, no matter how smart they may be, they cannot beat the state environmental regulatory authorities.

Oresanya counselled them to be more environmentally-friendly as lives of the residents are much more important to the state government than the revenue they pay to the state.
