Kyari, NNPC GMD, receives ‘The Sun Man of the Year’ Award

In recognition of his efforts since he assumed the leadership of the Corporation, Malam Mele Kyari, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (GMD/CEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has been honoured with the “The Sun Man of The Year Award”, the biggest recognition by The Sun Publishing Company Limited, publishers of The Sun Newspaper titles.

Malam Kyari received the award in a ceremony attended by eminent Nigerians Saturday, October 16, 2021, at Eko Hotel & Suites, on Victoria Island, Lagos.

Mr. Garba Deen Muhammad, Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division of NNPC, in a statement issued Sunday, October 17, in Abuja, FCT, said Mr. Onuoha Ukeh, Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Newspapers Limited, speaking on the award, disclosed that Malam Kyari was honoured for his doggedness and resilience in the way he managed the operations of the NNPC during the COVID-19 pandemic last year, when economies of several countries across the world were struggling for survival.

Ukeh said: “Take Mele Kyari and dissect. In addition to the record breaking N287billion profits posted for 2020, the best since inception 44 years, the NNPC which he heads published the Audited Financial Statements (AFS).

“It was trailblazing, and a whiff of good fortune in a beleaguered entity and time.”

Responding to the accolade bestowed on him, the NNPC GMD/CEO stated that the Corporation remains ever committed to conducting its operations with transparency and accountability.

Kyari attributed the successes recorded by the Management Team of the NNPC to the freehand and support accorded him President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he noted has never interfered in the affairs of the Corporation since he assumed office as the GMD/CEO.

“What we have done in recent years is to ensure that we take out all the opaqueness in NNPC.

“We also ensured that we represent Nigerians and work for them,” said he.

Thanking the publishers of The Sun Newspapers for finding him worthy of the award, Kyari described the honour as a huge responsibility and privilege, which would spur him to do more for the benefit of the over 200 million Nigerians.

Among other very important personalities at the event are Ambassador Babagana Kingibe former Secretary to the Government of the Federation; Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; Ondo State Governor (Arakunrin) Rotimi Akeredolu; Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki; former Abia State Governor Orji Uzor Kalu; captains of industry and seasoned public servants.

Accompanying the NNPC Chief to the occasion in Lagos were some members of his Management Team, including Mr. Umar Ajiya, Group Executive Director (GED) Finance & Accounts; Engr. Adokiye Tombomieye, GED Upstream; and Mr. Mohammed Ahmed, GED Gas & Power.

Others are Sir Billy Okoye, GED Ventures & Business Development; Mr. Bala Wunti, Group General Manager, National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS); Mohammed Ali-Zara, Managing Director, Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC); and Mr. Marcel Amu, Managing Director, Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL).
